Warrant of Fitness Inspections

A Warrant of Fitness (WOF) is a periodic vehicle inspection that’s required for all light vehicles to confirm they meet minimum safety standards for road use. A WOF is required annually once the vehicle is older than three years.

What a Warrant of Fitness inspection covers

The point of a WOF is make sure your car is roadworthy, so that it’s safe for you, your passengers, and other road users

Brakes are tested for effectiveness (footbrake and handbrake). We examine brake lines, hoses, and components for wear, leaks, or damage.

Tyres and wheels are checked for minimum tread depth (there must be at least 1.5mm across the full width of the tyre), sidewall damage, correct fitment, and whether the wheel nuts are secure. Mismatched tyre sizes or types that could affect handling are also flagged.

Headlights, taillights, brake lights, indicators, hazard lights, reversing lights, and number plate illumination must all be present and functioning correctly. Headlight aim is checked to ensure they're not dazzling oncoming traffic.

Steering and suspension are inspected for excessive play, wear in joints and bushings, and any damage that will compromise vehicle control or stability.

Windscreen and glazing must be free of cracks or chips in the driver's line of sight. The wipers and washers are tested for effectiveness, and mirrors are checked to ensure the driver has adequate rear vision.

Seatbelts are inspected for cuts, fraying, damage to buckles, and correct operation of the retraction mechanism. The correct number of belts must be fitted and working properly.

We look for corrosion or damage to the chassis, floor, and structural components that could compromise the vehicle's crash safety. Sharp edges that could injure occupants in a collision are also a failure point.

Fuel system components, including the tank, fuel lines, and filler cap, are checked for leaks.

Doors and latches must open, close, and latch securely when operated from inside and outside the vehicle.

The speedometer must be present and functional.

Exhaust is checked for leaks and that it's properly secured, however a WOF does not include an emissions test.

Items like vehicle registration, warrant of fitness sticker placement, and number plate legibility are also checked. A vehicle that fails on any item cannot be issued a WoF until the faults are corrected and it passes a reinspection.
